What's Up With Day One?

Has Day One, the NBC series-turned-miniseries about a group of survivors after a disaster, completely disappeared, or has it just been delayed?

Originally the series was scheduled for NBC's midseason schedule after the Olympics. When NBC announced their "winter schedule" it was nowhere to be seen. Day One has also disappeared from NBC's press site. As far as I can tell, no chatter has been made about episodes filming beyond the pilot, though that could just been an assumption. NBC's Day One page still exists but the associated video has "expired."

Could a regime change, NBC's falling fortunes, or the only-middling success of recent genre shows have killed it? Creator Jesse Alexander has been very silent on the matter on his @globalcouch Twitter, though he has made reference to pitching new projects. Aside from a Sargasso Planet reference, Day One hasn't been mentioned in months.

Hopefully NBC will make some kind of announcement either way about the show's future. With some transmedia tie-ins such as the Sargasso Planet fan site and the Facebook account of one of the characters, Zack Adamski (last updated on December 2), there seems to be a lot of good material to mine, and it sounded as though some other much-missed Heroes folks such as Jeph Loeb would be involved, which would only be a plus. It could also be possible that the network is delaying the series until next season - though it's hard to say, since the network and producer have been very quiet.

Yet Another Doctor Who Post...

Now that the Doctor Who finale has aired around the world, including here in the United States on BBC America, the countdown has begun not only to the first season of new adventures featuring Matt Smith as the Doctor - there's also the matter of the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray collections of the Doctor Who specials, scheduled to hit stores in the U.S. on February 2.

Eleven TV Events I'm Looking Forward To In 2010

2010 is almost here, and for those of you on the East Coast or in other countries, it may be here already. With the new year also comes new television, and 2010 promises to bring some good stuff.

Here's some of what I'm looking forward to in the new year. Some fan favorites like Chuck, True Blood, and LOST are noticeably absent; NOT because I dislike the shows or think they're not worth looking forward to - on the contrary, I'm sure they are - but instead, they are (don't kill me) not shows I currently watch.

Also conspicuously absent from this list is Heroes, which returns on January 4. I can only hope the show gets better, but right now, it's one of those things where I'd miss the show if it was gone, but I get so nostalgic for the days when every episode was a thing of greatness. (See: Season 1 between episodes 5 and 22)

Doctor Who: The End Of Time, Part 2 (January 1/2)
The United Kingdom gets this on January 1 itself. Those of us in the United States have to wait for Saturday on BBC America. This marks the end of Russell T. Davies' era as executive producer; it's also a farewell to a man who made the Doctor role his own, David Tennant.

Tennant's performance as the Doctor was amazing and at many times better than the scripts he was given to work with. I wish he had stayed for a year with incoming showrunner Steven Moffatt but sadly it is not to be. His successor, Matt Smith, has some powerful Converses to fill. I'm hopeful; especially when you consider it was almost five years ago that everyone was in a panic that new Doctor Christopher Eccleston was leaving after only one year in the role. That Tennant guy sure worked out, didn't he?

The Human Target (January 17)
I still wish this more resembled its comic book counterpart, but any TV show based on a comic book is welcome to me, and this show might have the right mix of elements to be a hit for FOX. Next time, though, adapt something that more folks have heard of though, okay?

The return of The Vampire Diaries (most likely January 21)
I was skeptical, expecting a TV Twilight when this premiered. But with every episode the mythology seems to get more and more involved, with new characters weaving in and out and new situations for the show's main characters. It's also really nice to have a CW show that's not about rich white girls, too.

Smallville: Absolute Justice (February 5)
Smallville actually returns on January 22 but the two-hour "movie event" (really two episodes tied together) featuring the legendary Justice Society of America will surely have a lot to offer, especially since it's written by Geoff Johns. Hopefully the JSA characters seen in the promotional images and trailers will be just as good in the episode, though I still think they could have cast a younger Star Girl.

The return of V (March 30)
Although the "fall finale" seemed to be more of a regular episode with some cliffhangers tacked on, I'm pretty confident that the return of V will be something pretty impressive - especially since the new showrunners have had time to organize things and set a direction before the show comes back. Coming on after LOST surely won't hurt, either.

The return of GLEE (April 13)
I'm not ashamed to admit that GLEE is one of those rare shows that I'll never wait to watch a few days later on DVR. A well-cast group of actors playing a well-written group of characters, some really good music, and Sue Sylvester - what more does a show need?

Day One (NBC Midseason)
Jesse Alexander's "the day after a catastrophe" series is right now unscheduled, and NBC has reduced it to being a four-hour "miniseries" to start, but I'm still very curious. Could be good.

Syfy's The Phantom (TBA)
It's aired in Canada (though no torrents can be found anywhere - boo! hiss!), and the costume looks silly as all get out, but again, the idea of a mainstream comics property on TV is very exciting to me.

AMC's The Walking Dead (TBA)
I recently got to reading the comic book trade paperbacks detailing the continuing story of this "open-ended zombie movie" by Robert Kirkman. The fact that Frank Darabont (The Mist) is directing and executive producing also has me very excited. Bonus points if they shoot in black and white.

Powers on FX (TBA)
Who knows if this will even come in 2010. The comic series by Bendis and Oeming would make a darned good TV show, though.

The Smallville Spin-Off (TBA)
I'm calling it now: 2010 will bring us news of a Smallville spin-off. This isn't going off of any sort of "insider information," either. It just seems like the logical thing to do. The CW needs a show like Smallville, and it's doubtful Smallville will last more than 10 seasons. On that same level of confidence, though, I'm pretty sure both Smallville and Supernatural will be back for one more season each.

Could A Marvel Comics-Related TV Series Be Next?

Disney's acquisition of comic book giant Marvel will be finalized soon, and if Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger has his way, the movie screen might not be the only place you'll see their iconic characters... TV could be on the horizon.

"Instead of making a $200 million movie and kind of betting the farm on one character, you can develop a television pilot, a television series," it has been reported that Iger told analysts this month.

Among Disney's many holdings is the broadcast network ABC in addition to cable outlets like ABC Family, The Disney Channel, and Disney XD. Could one of these be the home of a Marvel-related TV series?

One thing's for sure - once Smallville is over there will certainly be an opening for another good super-hero series based on classic characters on television.

Here are some of the latest headlines from across the KryptonSite network of sites:

- The CW has recently aired a new trailer with clips from upcoming Smallville episodes including the two-hour "Absolute Justice." Screen captures of the latest trailer can be found here, while caps from the [different] first one can be found here. Additionally, the title for the sixteenth episode of Season Nine has been revealed on the KryptonSite spoilers page.

- A new Heroes promotional trailer has been released by NBC. That can be found on HeroSite.net. Heroes returns January 4 with two back-to-back episodes.

- Series Two of Merlin has now concluded in the United Kingdom. What did you think? Talk about the finale on our forum!

- The Phantom doesn't air in the United States on Syfy until next year, but it's premiering in Canada on the Movie Network this week. More information including photos and character breakdowns can be found at PhantomSite.net.

- The winners of our BBC holiday contest will be announced shortly.

- Actress Mia Kirshner will soon be guesting on The Vampire Diaries.

- GLEE has been nominated for multiple Golden Globe awards.

AMC's The Walking Dead: Casting Choices

As far as I know there has been no announcement on when AMC's adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comic book series The Walking Dead will hit the air. But what we do have are 10 (almost 11!) trade paperbacks of the series thus far, which make for some really good reading for those uninitiated (including myself, who has just been discovering it).

But... to get the ball rolling on some discussion before AMC makes an announcement, I'd like to put the question out there:

Who would you like to see cast in The Walking Dead TV series?

My only for-sure choice after reading the first two trade paperbacks would be Thomas Jane as the lead character, Rick Grimes. Jane starred in director Frank Darabont's The Mist, so there's surely a working relationship there. (Darabont is a writer and executive producer for the TV series).

Smallville and V Actor Joins Caprica

Ryan Kennedy is keeping himself in the science fiction universe.

The KryptonSite Network has learned that the actor who impressed many as Cosmic Boy in Smallville and had a powerful role in the fourth episode of V will be taking on a multi-episode role in Syfy's Battlestar Galactica prequel spin-off Caprica.

Caprica, which has a pilot episode already available on DVD, will premiere as a regular series in the United States on Syfy on January 22, 2010. Ryan's first episode will be the 14th episode. Currently, 19 episodes are ordered for the first season.

No word yet on what kind of character Ryan will play.

More On Syfy's The Phantom

Smallville Guest Lands Teen Wolf

MTV is hoping that playing a werewolf is just as much of a role for a Tyler as it has been for a Taylor, as the cable channel has announced Tyler Posey as the star of their TV version of the classic Teen Wolf film franchise.

Smallville fans would remember Posey as Javier in the Season 6 episode "Subterranean."

This Teen Wolf is named Scott McCall (Edward Woodward's Equalizer son needs to sue!) - and he is portrayed as somewhat of a dork who gets super-powers, including the ability to attract the ladies, after a wolf attack.

There's a bad werewolf in town too, Tyler Hoechlin of 7th Heaven, who is described as a "vicious and predatory" werewolf.

Playing the female love interest will be Crystal Reed (Hard Times). Her character may have a secret as well which could put her into conflict with the series lead.

Rounding out the cast will be Dylan O'Brien as Scott's best friend. Casting breakdowns at least say that, like the original movie, the best friend will be named Stiles.

A pilot presentation will be shot, which is written by Criminal Minds creator Jeff Davis. Davis, Marty Adelstein and Rene Echevarria are executive producers.

Cashing In On A New Craze? FOX Orders Howl

After the success of New Moon and the television success of shows like True Blood or The Vampire Diaries, it should come as no surprise that FOX wants a piece of the perceived next fad - werewolves - in a new Dreamworks TV pilot in development for the network.

Variety describes the show, titled Howl, as "an epic family saga about warring families of werewolves in a small Alaskan town."

"Alaska is a place where people disappear and now you know why," writer Joshua Miller told Variety.

Variety also notes that the script reflects the changes that are going on in the country, and "metamorphosis and constant change is the basis of werewolf mythology," Miller added. "Howl" is about "the psychology of living with change."

Miller is writing the project with M.A. Fortin. Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank of DreamWorks TV will executive produce.

What do you think of this idea? Sound off in the comments... me, I'll withhold comment until I hear or see more, but I'm a little skeptical. At least it sounds better than that show that was pitched as "Sex and the City with were-women." And maybe unlike with Twilight, these werewolves will actually wear shirts...

Edited to add: Apparently here and on the KryptonSite Forum some people think this may be a good idea after all... giving the benefit of the doubt, I was skeptical about The Vampire Diaries and that turned out to be good... so, more thoughts, anyone?

DVD Review: Ben 10: Alien Swarm

Today (December 1), less than one week after its television debut, Warner Home Video has released a DVD of the recent Cartoon Network TV-movie, Ben 10: Alien Swarm.

The movie is based on the Ben 10 animated series that have come out over the years, which were created by comic book creators Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle, several of whom worked on Superman comics earlier in the decade and a very underrated but good run on X-Men comics bfore that. Directing the film is Alex Winter, better known to movie buffs as "the other guy from Bill & Ted."

Starring as Ben Tennyson, the boy with a watch that makes him turn into aliens, is Ryan Kelley. If you're a Smallville fan and the name sounds familiar, it's with good reason - Ryan played "Ryan" in two popular early episodes of the series, "Stray" and "Ryan." He was much younger then and although he has a young face, it'll make you feel old that he's not the kid he was in those early Smallvilles.

Perhaps I was living under a rock in not knowing Ben 10 had been adapted into live-action before. I don't know how good (or not) that effort was, but I will say that I'm sure any kid who grew up watching Ben 10 would probably think this movie is The Coolest Thing Ever. There are details like Kevin's green car that look pretty nice on screen, and the effects - especially considering they're for TV - are of a great quality. I know it would be expensive but I think a live-action Ben 10 series would make for fantastic TV for the younger set. I don't think there are that many live-action adventure series for the pre-teen ages; even something like Smallville might have content that parents might not want their kids to see, whereas Ben 10 is totally safe.

I admit without any experience of Ben 10 I was a little lost and detached. At 31, though, I'm sure I'm out of the target demographic, and I'd probably "get it" more if I'd seen more of the cartoons. Even if I hadn't been sent a DVD to watch, though, the trailers had me pretty curious.

Ben 10: Alien Swarm hits DVD today. If you have a younger nephew or a kid, they'd probably really dig it.

Advance Review: V Episode #4 "It's Only The Beginning"

More From Roland Emmerich On The 2012 TV Series

The Huffington Post has posted a new interview with producer Roland Emmerich where he talks a bit more about the prospect of a TV spin-off for 2012.

Here are some relevant highlights:

Q: Well, speaking of sequels, the word is that you're interested in making a TV show called 2013.

RE: Well, that's different because that's something like Lost, which has a totally different feel to it. It's more a little bit of District 9. These ships show up in Africa, there are some survivors and they're not happy people because they were left behind. Now how do you start off a new society? That has nearly no visual effects. It's all about characters and what will the future bring, hold for us.

Q: 2013 is going to happen pretty soon after this movie comes out. Do you have any actors or places in mind?

RE: No. We just made a deal with ABC, and we're very happy about that. I'm already discussing with the people who write it, and tried to help them with what this could be.

The original idea is from Harald, me and Mark Worden [this is actually a typo- he means "Mark Gordon"]. Mark is big on TV. Harald and I had an idea that everyone should do a TV show, because there were a lot of things that we couldn't incorporate into 2012 and it was so interesting.

What happens after all of this? We couldn't be riding the script. We had to end it at one point. We left at where they just discovered Africa is still existing and has risen a couple thousand feet, but that's it. And we ended on a really, really small note about a little girl who overcame her fear in a way. It's a very small way, which is very important and ends in something very personal.

I think a sequel is silly. There are certain sequels that work for me. But to make a sequel for a disaster movie, the people would expect a certain kind of visual effects. But [for 2012] there would actually be only what's happening between people, and that you can do a TV show week after week.

The CW Reactivates The Global Frequency

Global Frequency, the fantastic comic book mini-series by Warren Ellis, was first done as a TV series pilot by Leverage showrunner John Rogers back in 2005. It was hoped that it would go to series, but unfortunately, a change in executives at The WB network pushed the project out the door.

The pilot eventually leaked online to almost unanimously positive reviews. In it, Michelle Forbes played the enigmatic Miranda Zero.

Now, The CW has apparently ordered a script for a new Global Frequency TV project, four years after the original project died. It's definitely quite different from the other shows the network has in development - and it could make a good Friday night pairing with Smallville as both shows would probably skew male rather than the usual female-targeted programming on other nights.

Remaking The Un-remake-able

The recent passing of Equalizer star Edward Woodward got me to thinking about those TV show concepts that were created reviving classic television mainstays for a modern audience with new actors, and how the concept rarely if ever works. It also got me to thinking about some of the projects that are in the pipeline from the major TV networks. Some of this is also inspired by the reaction some had to my recent column where I predicted that some network "genius" will try to bring back The X-Files someday. (Hi, Mariko.)

Anyhow, the trend has become almost predictable: A TV studio finds out they have the rights to a popular concept and feels the urge to "reimagine" it for a new audience. Though unlike ensemble pieces like V or Battlestar Galactica, a series focusing on just one lead rarely flies in re-make land. Here are some examples:

The Bionic Woman - Although Michelle Ryan has since impressed on Merlin or Doctor Who, the top feeling you had when watching this short-lived ABC remake is "she's no Lindsay Wagner." The fact that the show also wasn't very good might've also hurt.

Night Stalker - ABC tried reviving Kolchak: The Night Stalker with Stuart Townsend, but unlike the Bionic reimiagining, this one was actually good. Some of the plots were very X-Files-like, but at the end of the day, audiences are probably more used to their Carl Kolchak being an older, slightly crotchety type. Carl Kolchak should not be "hot." Although cashing in on a known quantity often gets a show a lot of publicity before a program airs, this show might have had a better chance if it had no comparison to something that was so well-loved before.

Kojak - I don't think audience racism (the possibility of not accepting a Black actor as Kojak) hurt the USA Network's revival - the biggest thing getting in the way was that people had something in their mind for what Kojak is, and for a lot of those people, it's Telly Savalas. I never saw this show either way, so I can't say if it was any good or not.

For Fall 2010, NBC is developing a revival of The Rockford Files and House's David Shore is producing it. While it's great to have someone of such talent behind it, it's also worrisome, as the main character of Jim Rockford owed a lot to the actor that played him, James Garner.

I can't really think of anyone else as Rockford, if they are indeed totally redoing it, no matter how talented the people behind and in front of the camera may be. I'll be watching curiously, and who knows - I may like it! - but like the whole Bionic Woman thing, I don't know who could top the original.

Over on CBS, the producers of Fringe are bringing back Hawaii Five-O as a sequel to the original series rather than a remake. I actually think this one might work, if it's done well. Maybe while they're at it they can find out if the Five-O pilot that was allegedly produced around 1998 or so actually exists.

But then again... will people respond to a new CBS procedural that's not part of a current franchise? A few years back, Dick Wolf did Dragnet for NBC, and audiences yawned, despite having a great cast. Could Five-O meet the same fate?

Your thoughts are welcome. And if it's not clear, for the most part I love TV series revivals when they're done right, perhaps because they resonate with nostalgia for me in some ways.

Movie Trailers - Movies Blog

I may be in the minority here, but I enjoyed 2012 and would be very curious to see what happens next with a new civilization.

In other news, the FX cable channel has bought the rights to air the movie 2012 in 2012. Some media outlets have erroneously said FX has picked up the series, though that doesn't appear to be the case - at least not yet.

Six TV Series Revivals I'd Love To See

With the recent announcement that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles developer Josh Friedman is developing a Charlie's Angels remake for ABC Studios, so soon after the network's recent big launch of V, it got me thinking about some other TV "classics" that I think might work with a revival.

Bringing back an old series is often a slippery slope - comparisons to the source material are always going to come into play, and in a case like, say, Bionic Woman, where your leading lady is no Lindsay Wagner and the concept is far more complicated than it has to be, it can be trouble. V seems to have done well by having its own unique but familiar take on the Visitors; Battlestar Galactica also ran with its original source material and created something of its own. NBC's failed Knight Rider had issues, too, not realizing that a big reason why the original series worked was the interplay between David Hasselhoff's Michael Knight and the car, KITT, ably voiced by William Daniels, who gave the car a life of its own. Instead, they gave us characters with more issues than we needed to care about, a KITT that didn't seem to be as cool as the original model of 25 years ago, and supporting characters who were meant to be "funny" but came off more on the side of "annoying."

With that said... here are six series or concepts that I think could be just as fresh today, if done right. I don't expect everyone to agree with my choices, but I would love to hear some feedback in the comments section here. Here's that list.

#1. Dallas

Dallas premiered in 1978 and lasted until 1991, covering the entire 80's and being very representative of the riches and greed that many associate with that decade. The show gave us one of TV's best villains, J.R. Ewing, and also popularized the "season finale cliffhangers" that we still get on TV today.

In the late 1990's, CBS aired the first of two reunion TV-movies for the series, J.R. Returns. The movie was quite successful, and one of my favorite aspects of the movie was that the sons of J.R. and Bobby - John Ross and Christopher - were now becoming adults with good (or bad) habits of their own. Unfortunately the "younger generation" was completely forgotten by the time CBS aired the second reunion movie, War of the Ewings, and it's a shame -- Dallas is a concept that has always been generational. The feud between the Ewings and the Barnes family started with the "older generation" of Jock Ewing and Digger Barnes, continued to their sons, and it'd be really interesting to see what the third generation would do. The fact that the oil industry isn't very revered these days would also put a VERY different spin on the concept.

Allegedly, a new Dallas series or pilot exploring that "next generation" is in development for the TNT cable network. However, the lack of mainstream press on this project makes me wonder if this is just a rumor or a pipe dream. If it happens, though, I would watch every week. Concepts like 90210 and especially Melrose Place are very shaky to do a revival or a sequel series in the same continuity - but in this case, because the series had always been generational, I think this would work.

#2. 21 Jump Street

So The CW likes mining FOX hits to get their teen demographic. That much is pretty clear. So why hasn't anyone tried to revive 21 Jump Street for TV already?

21 Jump Street was one of FOX's first hits, especially among the teen demographics, and among other things it featured a young actor named Johnny Depp among its cast. The concept was pretty straightforward - young-looking cops go undercover, usually into a high school, to solve crimes that also involve young people. The CW already likes hiring 30 year olds to play high schoolers (hello, Teddy from 90210) so a series like this seems like it'd be a no-brainer. I think The CW's target audience would love it. And even better... most viewers under 25 have never even heard of or seen the original series, which would prevent people from making unfair comparisons.

#3. The X-Files

Blasphemy, you say. But I can guarantee that sometime in the next 15 years, some TV executive is going to think bringing The X-Files back to TV is a good idea. We've seen how well TV audiences reacted to X-Files substitutes like Doggett and Reyes, and ultimately it wasn't too pretty, but still... could the Powers That Be resist? I doubt it.

Though it's almost too bad that there is no X-Files on TV by 2012. Weren't there some prophecies in the original series having to do with that year? Either way, with the right casting, and the right creative people, I think I could actually get behind that and like it.

#4. Faith the Vampire Slayer

Vampires are hot right now. Eliza Dushku doesn't have a job anymore. Need I say more? (I count this since it would technically be a revival of Buffy).

#5. The Dukes of Hazzard

This is probably the most mockable choice on my list. Full disclosure: The Dukes of Hazzard was the first "favorite TV show" I ever had. What appealed to me about it then (and still appeals to me now) was the whole "right vs. wrong, Hatfields vs. McCoys" type feel to it, with characters who may have fought, but ultimately, the show was about family. There was adventure, there were fast cars, and there was Rosco chasing them and falling into a ditch.

The Dukes also might be one of the most difficult series to revive, either as a sequel or as a remake, mostly because we saw how bad it was when the two leads were replaced in 1982, and then we saw how it was even worse with the two craptacular movies that came out in this past decade. But remembering the core concept of family - and the fact that the Dukes is about car chases and not a constant flow of sex jokes - and they might be onto something. Get two good looking guys as the leads and a girl who looks good in short shorts, and a sheriff who's actually funny, and it'd work. Involve original cast members and it'd be even better. But would the audience of 2010 be interested? Possibly not. I know I'd watch, if it was done right.

#6. The Love Boat

UPN tried this in 1998 with The Love Boat: The Next Wave, which, despite having a great cast (including Robert Urich and Smallville's Phil Morris!), was kind of lost at sea. There were probably a number of factors against it - not just the fact that it was on UPN; the awful truth is that the D-list guest stars they got on just weren't interesting enough.

Where was Charo, for example? And what a lot of people forget is, although The Love Boat seemed to be a depository for washed-up actors... a lot of the stars they had on that show were still appearing on popular series at the times they took their cruise. They had folks like Sherman Hemsley, Robert Reed, Jaclyn Smith, Suzanne Somers, Marion Ross... and all at the peaks of their careers.

Now, look at the success of shows like Dancing With The Stars or even VH1's Celebreality line-up. A lot of people now love to think "whatever happened to?" Now, wouldn't you like to see your favorite actors... on a cruise? No?

Well, I would. It's just cheesy enough that it'd be easy guilty pleasure TV for me. Bonus if they did episodes that paired up classic TV couples like, say, Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher, as different characters for episodes.

Honorable Mention: CHiPs

TNT tried a remake with a TV-movie in 1999 and I really enjoyed it. But would people enjoy a light-hearted show about two members of the California Highway Patrol today? I don't know. I'm not counting it among my six, either, because I believe there's a movie in development starring Wilmer Valderrama... and my Spidey senses predict that it's going to be stupid.

2012: The Television Series?

The movie 2012 doesn't come out until November 13, but that hasn't stopped one of the movie's producers from speaking to Entertainment Weekly about a possible television spin-off.

Titled 2013, such a television series would explore what happens after the end of the world. Possible spoilers below from the EW article...

“The plan is that it is 2013 and it’s about what happens after the disaster,” Emmerich told EW while walking the red carpet for the 2012 premiere Tuesday. “It is about the resettling of Earth. That is very, very fascinating. (2012 writer/producer) Harald Kloser and I came up with the idea and we have the luxury of having a producer on the film who is a big TV producer, Mark Gordon. We said to Mark, ‘Why don’t you do a TV show that picks up where the movie leaves off and call it 2013?’ I think it will focus on a group of people who survived but not on the boats … maybe they were on a piece of land that was spared or one that became an island in the process of the crust moving. There are so many possibilities of what they could do and I’d be excited to watch it.”

Such a big series comes on the heels of the recent huge successful launch of V. ABC's other genre series, Flashforward, has also done fairly well although it has fallen a little bit in ratings in recent weeks.

Advance Review: Community "Introduction To Statistics"

NBC, hoping to get people to remember that their sitcom Community has now moved to Thursdays at 8PM, sent out screeners of this week's Halloween-themed episode. The sitcom, starring Joel McHale in the lead role, is described like this, for those of you who haven't seen it:

From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo ("Arrested Development") comes "Community," a smart comedy series about higher education -- and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, "Community" focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin' lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, "The Soup"), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs ("The Book of Daniel"); Yvette Nicole Brown ("Rules of Engagement"); Danny Pudi ("Greek"); Alison Brie ("Mad Men"); and comedy legend Chevy Chase ("Saturday Night Live"). "Community" is a Krasnoff Foster Entertainment, Harmonious Claptrap and Russo Brothers production in association with Sony Pictures Television and Universal Media Studios. Russ Krasnoff ("The Soloist"), Dan Harmon ("The Sarah Silverman Program"), Joe Russo ("Arrested Development"), Anthony Russo ("Arrested Development") and Gary Foster ("The Soloist") serve as executive producers. Joe and Anthony Russo directed the pilot that was written by Dan Harmon.

Okay, first, the fact that the show's directors share names with Blossom's older brothers is funnier than the actual show. Yes, I'm 12. Anyhow, here's how NBC describes tonight's episode:

JEFF MUST CHOOSE BETWEEN GETTING A DATE OR HONORING A PROMISE TO ANNIE -Jeff (Joel McHale) has the hots for his statistics professor and is determined to take her out on a date. He finds the perfect opportunity to pursue her but it happens to interfere with a Day of the Dead party Annie (Alison Brie) is throwing for their Spanish class. Meanwhile, Pierce (Chevy Chase) comes to terms with being old. Ken Jeong, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Danny Pudi and Donald Glover also star.

This was my first time seeing Community, so I don't know if earlier episodes might give more of a feel for the characters, but based upon this first episode alone, I felt more character depth from Saved by the Bell. I don't think it was due to the cast (I know Joel McHale can and has been funny), and there WERE a few shining moments in the writing (a reference to Urkel made me laugh out loud), but it is nowhere near the kind of solid show that I see in something like How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, or 30 Rock. I will give them one benefit of the doubt - I see some Arrested Development alums among the crew and that was a series that I didn't "get" the first time around that I grew to love later.

As things stand, though, Chevy Chase's Pierce character was the only one I really grabbed onto, and I did get some laughs out of Abed dressed as Batman. I also liked the references to Beastmaster. But the situations of the episode, where Jeff skips out on his friends to hang out with the "big kids" (or in this case, to try and woo a professor), seem right out of the bad teen sitcom playbook. Except without the teens. I think these characters are supposed to be funny and wacky, but when it's adults acting like this it's more on the level of sad. It was more fun when this behavior came from Screech.

(There's a that moment I do admit that I did like later on with the Batman costume guy. Though as other series like Only Fools And Horses have shown to TV history, you can rarely go wrong with that.)

Although I run a series of websites based mostly upon the sci-fi genre (with a few exceptions), I've always been a big TV geek. I remember the powerful Thursday nights of "Must See TV" back when it was Cosby, A Different World, Cheers, and Night Court. And I also remember the 90's when it was usually Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, and filler sitcoms in between. While Community has a few moments, it's just not the kind of concept or show that is as good as any of those predecessors. But for now, when it comes to Thursday nights at 8, I'll be sticking with The Vampire Diaries, with Flashforward on the DVR. I'm not saying Community is must-not-see TV - I'd probably turn it on if nothing else in the same timeslot interested me, or if a promo caught my attention - but my first impression wasn't the greatest. Hopefully the show can and will improve before it's too late.

Community airs tonight (October 29) at 8PM on NBC.

New Destinations In The KryptonSite Network (+ The Return Of An Old One)

A few new destinations have now been added to the KryptonSite Network - although, whether or not they become full-on sites is up to readers and interest.

First, although GLEE doesn't really match the comic-booky, sci-fi-genre type stuff you usually find here in the Network, the GLEE sub-forum at KryptonSite is going really well. So, even if it doesn't become a full site, Gleeksite now exists as a GLEE portal. At the very least you'll probably find episode descriptions at the new domain, and if there's demand or interest for a full site, then you'll surely find more. I know I'd use any excuse I can find to write about GLEE.

The blog posting about Syfy's The Phantom seemed to draw interest in seeing a site devoted to it. Right now there's just an informational page with a cast list and description. If and when more news comes out you'll very likely find news there. That new domain is Phantomsite.net.

And then finally, more than six years after domain squatters took the name, KnightsPast.com is now back in the KryptonSite Network. I've always loved that name - which was originally used for a site about a Jack Knight Starman TV series that was proposed for ABC in 2003. I'm thinking I might use the URL to share some information about the Justice Society characters who are coming to Smallville. Either way, I love the name and I'm determined to do something with it.

GLEE - November 2009 Promotional Trailer

Kirkman's The Walking Dead Comes To AMC

One comics-to-TV project that's in development right now is The Walking Dead, based on the Image Comics series by Robert Kirkman. It's slated to become a TV series with Frank Darabont tapped as writer, director, and executive producer.

Saturday boredom was taken care of for many yesterday thanks to a trend started by Chris Colfer, one of the actors from FOX's GLEE.

The trend got "Sue Sylvester" up to be the second-most-posted-about subject on Twitter on October 17, behind only "#beatcancer." The Sue Sylvester wave seems to be continuing through to the next day.

TV GLEE

Every once in a while a TV show will come along that just plain makes its viewers happy. This year, the show that brings me the most, well, glee is FOX's GLEE.

Created by Ryan Murphy, who also brought us Popular and Nip-Tuck, every episode seems to have a few good musical pieces. Some characters are very exaggerated in their traits, but in the case of characters like Sue Sylvester, that's a very good thing.

We've added a GLEE sub-forum to the KryptonSite Forums even though it's clearly not of the sci-fi type genre you find throughout the rest of the forum. With new episodes still airing it's a good chance to join the fun.

Also - TVShowsOnDVD.com has revealed that the first thirteen episodes of GLEE will be on DVD December 29. You can pre-order a copy here.

KryptonSite: What's In A Name?

Here's a question for all of you out there....

KryptonSite started as (and still is) a fan site for The CW's Smallville. Over the years, it's expanded into a network of sites and the KryptonSite Forums now host discussion for not just Smallville. There are dedicated forums for shows like Heroes, The Vampire Diaries, Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who and more.

Here's a question for those of you out there, regarding the other series (and the site network as a whole) - would you prefer a different name for the site network and for the forum to be housed elsewhere? Or should it stay as is while Smallville is still on the air?

Personally speaking, I sometimes wonder - even though there are a lot of people posting on the forums - if more people would post in the other forums if it wasn't "at that Smallville site." And "KryptonSite Network," while it does say "associated with KryptonSite," does kind of make you think of little green rocks.

KryptonSite as a name and a brand has worked so people know what kind of a site to expect (hopefully)... but would something more general work better for the network? (The Smallville site would, of course, stay as is.)

I will have to say, though, that finding the right alternative name could or would be an even bigger challenge.

Thoughts?

First Look: RHI's Phantom Promotional Poster

It's a bit small, but here's your first look at RHI Entertainment's promotional poster for the upcoming Syfy miniseries based on comic classic The Phantom.

Even though the poster image more resembles the Blue Beetle - guess it's only fair, as the original Beetle was himself somewhat of a Phantom stand-in.

The miniseries will be premiering in 2010, and stars Ryan Carnes as Chris Walker/The Phantom, Sandrine Holt as Guran, Jean Marchand as Wandermaark, Cameron Goodman as Renny Davidson, Isabella Rossellini as Dr. Bella Lithia, Ron Lea as Detective Sgt. Sean Davidson, Cas Anvar as Raatib Singh, and Ivan Smith as Dr. Deepak Baboor.

NBC Trims Their Order On Day One

One of the upcoming TV projects I've been very excited to see is Heroes producer Jesse Alexander's new series, Day One which premieres on NBC next year.

He's recruited some talented people for it such as Jeph Loeb, and since Heroes is wrapping for the season before the Olympics, it meant there'd still be a genre show on the network. (I still need to get into Chuck, obviously.)

NBC has announced they are cutting down their order to make Day One a miniseries, which could lead into an ongoing series later on. I sure hope this strategy works. I'm a little nervous already about V's four episode run in November, and don't want another show-that-looks-good to be cut prematurely.

Here's what the Hollywood Reporter had to say:

The order for NBC's midseason drama series "Day One" has been reduced to the two-hour pilot plus two episodes.

The show, chronicling life on earth after a global catastrophe, will now air as a four-hour miniseries following NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics.

NBC's scripted chief Angela Bromstad has repeatedly said that the network brass was envisioning "Day One" as "a big event."

After examining the promo budget associated with launching a 13-episode midseason series, NBC executives opted to run the drama as a miniseries, with creator Jesse Alexander said to be on board with the decision.

The network is still leaving the door open for "Day One" to continue as a series after the four-hour spring run, citing the success of "Battlestar Galactica" on sibling cable channel SyFy, which also originated as a miniseries.

"Day One," produced by UMS, stars Julie Gonzalo, David Lyons, Carly Pope, Adam Campbell, Thekla Reuten, Derek Mio, Addison Timlin and Catherine Dent.

The series was originally slated to air Mondays at 9 p.m.

Warner Bros. To Produce A Lobo Movie

While everyone's busy talking about Disney buying Marvel Comics and related characters, Warner Bros. has signed Guy Ritchie to direct a movie based on the comic book character Lobo.

The most recent script draft has been written by Don Payne. Joel Silver, Akiva Goldsman, and Andrew Rona will be producing. Steve Richards and Kerry Foster will be executive producers.

Warner Bros. is aiming for a PG-13 rating, and it is said the film will be strong on visual effects.

Production is expected to begin early next year.

Tonight here in the U.S., NBC will be airing the final two episodes of the first series of Merlin.

The show's ratings were so-so here in the U.S. and I wouldn't be surprised if future seasons are seen on outlets like BBC America only. The show itself, though, was something quite good. In many ways, it remnded me of early Smallville... and tonight's season finale is no exception, as you will get a lot of flashbacks to Smallville Season 5.

Merlin is well-cast, charming, and fun. The U.K. has brought us a lot of good TV lately (Doctor Who, Torchwood, the original Life On Mars) and this is definitely no exception.

I've been watching Season 4 of Supernatural to post a DVD review in the next couple days, and I have to say, I'm very impressed with how randomly accessible it is.

In a world where TV gets overly complicated with its concepts, SPN is solid. A lot of the episodes I've seen have been self contained, and there's even a Back to the Future homage - how can you go wrong with that?

Flash Forward

One of the genre-related shows premiering this Fall that ABC is very high on is Flash Forward, based on the novel of the same name.

In the TV series, everyone seems to black out for over two minutes - and in that period of time, they witness a "flash forward" to April 2010. The show explores the mysteries of what exactly everyone has seen, and how they get to that point. There's also the mystery of how all of this happened in the first place.

There are many familiar faces within the pilot and even more in the series itself. ABC has done a lot of viral marketing, too, with hopes of this being their next LOST.

Whether or not it will pan out to be a hit remains to be seen; personally speaking, at the moment V looks like a much more accessible, fun mainstream hit. There's also not a lot of activity on the KryptonSite Flash Forward forum thread just yet, but maybe that just means it's not the same kind of audience. That could change when the show actually airs, though.

Either way - while there is no Flash Forward site in the KryptonSite Network - we do have a gallery. Check it out! Several new images have just been added. And if you've got some comments about your expectations for the show, please leave them here.

Myself, I'm not sure if I will be watching beyond the pilot. The Vampire Diaries on The CW will be airing at the exact same time... and while the storytelling on the ABC show might be a bit deeper, TVD itself is a lot of fun. So, we'll see.

Midnight, Mass. to NBC?

Another DC Comics/Vertigo property may be headed to television soon. NBC has started evelopment on a project based on the comic book Midnight, Mass.

The project, which had been in development before a few years ago, will be written by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts for Warner Bros. Television and the Jinks/Cohen Co.

The Hollywood Reporter describes Midnight, Mass. as revolving around Adam and Julia Kadmon, a sophisticated, sexy, globe-trotting husband-and-wife team who solve mysteries and crimes of the supernatural.

THR also notes that it is one of the "most heavily pursued of DC Comics' properties" for a television series. Odd considering that most comic book fans would be unfamiliar with the source material, which was created by John Rozum.

Currently there isn't even a Midnight, Mass. Wikipedia page, though with this news, there will surely be one made in the future.

On The Subject Of Blogs And Writing...

Just thought I'd give a shout out here to two people who've really added a lot to the KryptonSite Network of sites.

Otto Berkeley has been writing Heroes reviews for quite a while, and his attention to detail catches things that most don't even catch in multiple viewings! You can find his reviews at http://herosite.net/blog

Cindy Houghton a.k.a. "Triplet" has been KryptonSite's Smallville reviewer for several years now, and in my opinion, she's great at pointing out and giving appreciation for the best parts of the show while still having a critical eye. I personally like that she doesn't take sides on "shipper wars" when writing. If only I could send her Tom Welling as thanks. She can be found at http://www.kryptonsite.com/triplet.htm.

So, if you haven't seen either of their reviews, check them out! Now to find reviewers for V or The Vampire Diaries next year.... anyone interested?

And while I'm calling people out - also some "thanks" to the mods at the K-Site forums. It's a difficult job at times, but they all do their best to keep the peace... and they have to put up with me, which isn't always easy.

KryptonSite Forums Question

I posted something like this back on August 9 but didn't get much response, so I figured a poll might get some better responses.

Lately we've listed Heroes with the "KryptonSite Television Forums" section, but now that the season is approaching, we've considered moving all of the Heroes sub-forums back onto the main page of the forum.

The question is, would you prefer to have Heroes on the main page of the KryptonSite forum, which would mean a lot more to scroll past, or keep it with the "Television Forums" where V, The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and more reside?

And moreso, would you like to see the other forums "popped out" too, even though it would mean a lot more to scroll past on the main page?

Personally, I could go either way on this. It's nice to have Spoilers, Cast, Creative, etc. forums visible on the main page, but at the same time, the new placement can expose people to some of the other forums on KryptonSite - it's not just Smallville.

Superman Co-Creator's Family Given Rights

According to Variety, several of the rights to the Superman character have reverted back to the family of one of the Superman co-creators.

This should not affect Smallville too much - hopefully - as the series will surely be over by 2013, and the story elements that DC no longer has the rights to will hopefully not be affected.

I'll leave my opinions on this matter to myself, so I don't alienate those readers who may disagree with me. What I will say, though, is that it's fortunate that current work-for-hire contracts make it very clear who owns what so situations like these will hopefully not recur in the future.

In a blatant attempt to drum up some comments for this blog, I want to ask you, the readers, which (if any) comic books you'd like to see made into television series.

So often now, the movies get all the cool stuff - but who wouldn't want to see Y: The Last Man as an ongoing series? Or Nightwing? Teen Titans? Daredevil? Starman? The Legion of Super-Heroes? Justice League? The New Mutants? Wonder Twins? Darkhawk?

So here's your chance to sound off. And yes, I was kind of kidding about the Wonder Twins. And yes, Darkhawk rocks, and nothing you say will make me think otherwise.

Anyone who's visited the KryptonSite Network sites or seen the network's Twitter feed knows I am extremely excited for ABC's new V.

The pilot is excellent, and ABC must be happy with it because they've announced that it will be premiering a few months earlier than expected - on November 3. The timeslot for the show will be Tuesdays at 8PM.

For those of you who may not have caught them the first time, check out VisitorSite.net's V interviews. And PLEASE spread the word about VisitorSite.net - I'd love for it to be a premier destination for fans of the show, much like KryptonSite has been all of these years for Smallville.

The awards show airs on FOX Monday night, August 10.

Just changed the home page at KryptonSite.com - the "Click to Enter KryptonSite" is still there, of course, but the "portal" to headlines on other sites is a bit more prevalent.

Hopefully this can be used - at least for now - to post announcements tying in to the shows featured on KryptonSite Network websites.

This is an exciting time as - with the recent announcement that V will be premiering on November 3 and airing on Tuesdays - there will soon be a KryptonSite Network show for every night of the week!

Mondays will give us Heroes at 8PM on NBC. The fourth season will premiere on September 21, 2009.

On Tuesdays, as previously mentioned, V will start on November 3.

Human Target will air on Wednesdays starting in January 2010. The show is based on the DC Comic of the same name.

The Vampire Diaries takes Smallville's old Thursday night slot preceding Supernatural. The show premieres September 10.

Finally, Smallville returns for its NINTH season on September 25!
